Older person driving

The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging has launched a campaign designed to help older adults realize when giving up driving may be the safest choice.

To guide seniors through this difficult transition, the association has developed a brochure to educate seniors and help them prepare for life without driving.

The issue can be ticklish for independent living operators and even some assisted living communities, where residents may see driving as an essential part of their independence.

“Our goal is to shed light on a critical issue that will likely affect most families with an older loved one who may need to limit or eliminate their driving , and to provide a catalyst for discussion, and hopefully, action,” said Sandy Markwood, the organization’s CEO.
