Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR)

Senior living operators and other health providers are under increased risk for cyberattacks that could threaten residents, several lawmakers suggested at a recent House hearing.

House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) testified that such attacks threaten “every business” and that it is “not a matter of if they will be infiltrated, but when.”

“That’s why we’re pursuing legislation to strengthen data security and certainty in the handling of breaches,” he added.

Walden noted that while the Department of Health and Human Services performed well during the recent WannaCry cyberattack on computers worldwide, additional vigilance is required. There was a general consensus at the meeting that more resources are needed. The meeting follows the release of a new report indicating several ways to improve cyber security.
