The AARP will not renew its membership with the American Legislative Exchange Council, according to several news reports.
Formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons, the 30 million-plus member AARP has come under growing criticism for its ties with the American Legislative Exchange Council. ALEC, as it’s known, is a conservative organization that drafts model legislation — including bills that target the Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security programs.
Last week, the Alliance for Retired Americans released a statement that criticized the relationship.
“We’re deeply disappointed to learn that AARP is sponsoring ALEC, an organization that has supported state efforts that hurt seniors and working Americans,” according to the release.
In a statement to Politico confirming the breakup, AARP announced it will “continue to explore avenues that will enhance our interaction with organizations and elected officials that represent different perspectives in order to further the issues important to Americans 50-plus and their families.”
