Friendship hosted a fire and disaster response drill Sept. 28.
More than 70 staff members and 58 residents participated as well as 40 fire, police and EMS personnel.
The drill scenario began with a mock fire that broke out in a resident room on the third floor of Friendship’s assisted living building. Over the course of only a few minutes, the fire spread to an unmanageable level not able to be contained by staff. As the fire spread, emergency response agencies were contacted to assist with the emergency while staff continued to evacuate residents.
Although beneficial for Friendship’s staff preparedness, the community said these exercises also are essential to preparing responders for actual emergencies.
“Having these community partnerships allow us to identify the needs of our facility as well as the needs of their organizations,” said Jeremy Howard, BSN, RN-BC, an occupational health nurse and facility safety officer at Friendship Health. “These training drills help us demonstrate that we are prepared for any disaster event that could happen at Friendship.”
Friendship said it conducts other exercises regularly to ensure that staff members are prepared for various types of emergency situations.
