The daughter of a former assisted living resident has filed a lawsuit against the community where she lived, claiming negligence, reckless misconduct and wrongful death.

In the complaint, obtained by MsKnight’s Senior Living, Gail Turner maintains that her mother, Patricia Splain, a resident of Beulahland Assisted Living in Grafton, WV, “suffered systemic abuse and neglect, causing significant injury [that] ultimately led or contributed to her death in April 2015.”

Splain became a resident of Beulahland in March 2012, according to the document, and subsequently experienced multiple falls that resulted in fractures, dehydration that led to acute kidney injury, urinary tract infections and Clostridium difficile colitis that resulted in sepsis. The lawsuit also claims that Splain was physically abused by fellow residents.

Beulahland, according to the lawsuit, had insufficient staffing and failed to communicate with doctors and family members regarding Splain’s status. Additionally, Turner said, Beulahland  failed to provide a safe environment and adequate care and monitoring.

A Beulahland representative told McKnight’s Senior Living that the community had no comment on the lawsuit.
