Residents of the Summer House memory care neighborhood of Front Porch’s Villa Gardens continuing care retirement community in Pasadena, CA, who are members of the community’s Joyful Hearts Chorus recently were practicing twice a week for an Aug. 30 talent show that welcomed more than 200 guests.

The choir, led by Front Porch’s director of volunteer services with the assistance of a consultant licensed psychologist who documents her observations and provides training on how to approach those with Alzheimer’s, also includes residents’ caregivers, family and friends.

The rehearsals, Villa Gardens said, provided enjoyment for all participants. Beyond that, however, they triggered vivid memories and stimulating socialization involving residents. Members also experienced intergenerational interaction; the choir rehearses and performs with the Los Angeles Young Ambassadors, a youth choir.
