A Sarasota, FL, woman has been arrested for stealing thousands of dollars from a couple who lived in the Brookdale assisted living community where she was a caregiver, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

Katherine Murphy allegedly spent more than $4,000 in almost 100 transactions using the couple’s debit card before the son discovered the unauthorized activity and had the card canceled. The financial institution issued a new card, which the couple never received, although someone later activated it.

Surveillance footage allegedly recorded Murphy withdrawing an additional $2,300 in cash using the new card at an ATM on Oct. 14. When detectives executed a search warrant Nov. 4, they recovered several of the items that she purchased using the stolen cards, according to the sheriff’s office.
