Brian Geyser named Maplewood Senior Living's new vice president of clinical innovation and population health

Brian Geyser, APRN-BC, MSN, has been named vice president of clinical innovation and population health at Maplewood Senior Living, Westport, CT.

He is responsible for building and leading a governance structure that will fuel new care delivery models, clinical solutions, technology innovations and health strategy initiatives to improve resident experience and health outcomes.

“Creative healthcare delivery models and technology innovation are increasingly important in the senior living sector,” said Gregory D. Smith, president and CEO of Maplewood Senior Living. “Brian has diverse experience as a clinician, educator and technology entrepreneur and business leader. He brings a highly relevant skill set and a fresh perspective to our industry at a time when our residents' needs are changing and our industry is evolving.”

Geyser said that one of the key initiatives he will oversee is the launch of a new senior care innovation and technology center planned for 2018.

His additional responsibilities will include developing novel ways to deliver highly coordinated and integrated care to Maplewood residents by leveraging emerging technologies, population health management strategies, new care models and strategic partnerships. He also will work with external stakeholders such as health systems, provider groups, accountable care organizations, universities, vendors and advocacy organizations to develop strategic partnerships, enhance collaboration, improve care coordination, optimize information exchange and explore research opportunities to achieve positive outcomes.

Maplewood owns and operates 14 senior living communities in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Ohio. Future developments include Princeton, NJ, Southport, CT, and the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The Manhattan project falls within the company's newest brand, Inspīr.

Will Owens named vice president of finance for Legacy Senior Living

Will Owens has joined Legacy Senior Living, a Cleveland, TN-based senior living management company, as vice president of finance.

In his new role, Owens will oversee the financial and accounting functions for all Legacy Senior Living communities and will manage and direct the company's ability to deliver long-term value to the residents and team members.

Owens brings almost 10 years' experience in senior living or healthcare finance and accounting to the company. He is a certified healthcare finance professional with the Tennessee chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

Owens earned his undergraduate degree in accounting from Lee University and furthered his education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he received an MBA.

Shawn Johnston to join HCP as senior vice president and chief accounting officer

Shawn Johnston will join Irvine, CA-based HCP as senior vice president and chief accounting officer, effective Aug. 15.

Johnston will succeed the current chief accounting officer, Scott Anderson, who is leaving HCP to pursue other career opportunities. Anderson will remain with HCP in his current capacity through Aug. 17 to ensure a smooth transition and oversee the preparation of the company's second-quarter 2017 financial statements, HCP said.

Johnston is joining HCP from multifamily real estate investment trust UDR, where he is chief accounting officer. He joined UDR in September 2013 as controller and served in that role until 2016, when he became CAO. He also served as interim principal financial officer from June 2016 through December 2016.

Prior to Johnston's tenure at UDR, he served as CAO at American Residential Communities, a residential real estate company. Previously, he worked at Ernst & Young for eight years as a certified public accountant.

Chris Terry named regional vice president of operations for Legacy Senior Living

Chris Terry has joined Legacy Senior Living, a Cleveland, TN-based senior living management company, as regional vice president of operations.

In this new position, he will oversee operations for Legacy facilities in Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia.

Terry brings more than 15 years of experience in senior care management to Legacy Senior Living, including three years as a regional director of operations.

“I started working in this industry as a cook and have worked through many different positions in the senior care field,” he said. “I am dedicated to serving this generation and am very excited about the opportunity to serve in this position.”

Terry served in the U.S. Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Reserve for seven years, with military occupational specialties in infantry, administration and combat water survival. Before his service, he completed his undergraduate degree in history at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Gabe Stoll is new executive director at Genacross Lutheran Services–Wolf Creek Campus

Gabe Stoll has been appointed executive director for the Genacross Lutheran Services–Wolf Creek Campus (formerly Lutheran Village at Wolf Creek), a continuing care retirement community in Holland, OH.

As executive director, he will be responsible for the day-to-day operations, community outreach and business development of the campus, which includes independent living, assisted living, short-term and long-term skilled nursing care and rehabilitation services.

Most recently, Stoll was the executive director of the Genacross Lutheran Services–Sandusky Campus, formerly Lutheran Memorial Home. Before that, he served as associate executive director at the Wolf Creek Campus, where he was responsible for the assisted living, dietary department and activities department. He began working for the organization in August 2012 as the director of human resources for the Wolf Creek Campus.

Stoll is a licensed nursing home administrator in the state of Ohio. He earned an undergraduate degree in healthcare administration from Bowling Green State University.

Philip Jacob promoted to associate executive director of The Buckingham

Philip Jacob has been promoted to associate executive director of The Buckingham senior living community in Houston.

He started at The Buckingham as healthcare administrator almost six years ago and has spent two decades in the hospitality and healthcare industries. 

“Phil will continue to oversee the operations of the community's healthcare program so that it runs in accordance with the highest quality of service,” said Darrell Sheaffer, executive director of The Buckingham. “He will also handle the day-to-day activities of the community, meeting with each department to ensure daily operations run smoothly. However, it is Phil's understanding of the community that will best guide him as he promotes a successful team environment and maintains satisfaction of residents and their families.”

The Buckingham, a nonprofit life plan community sponsored by Senior Quality Lifestyles Corp., is undergoing a $72 million expansion that will add 183 new residences to the community's current 323 residences.

Patti Stambaugh named spiritual wellness coordinator at Monarch Landing

Patti Stambaugh has been named to the newly created position of spiritual wellness coordinator at Monarch Landing, a life plan community in Naperville, IL.

“Patti is here to support the residents by providing different events and educational opportunities for religion and spirituality,” said Sara Friel, interim executive director of Monarch Landing. “She supports our different faith communities and other spiritual groups.”

Stambaugh's background is in psychology and gerontology, and her most recent work experience is as a social services director and nursing home administrator.

“I've also done work with dementia training,” she said.

Monarch Landing is a Senior Care Development-affiliated community managed by Life Care Services.

John C. Stys named chief operating officer/chief nursing officer of Rainbow Hospice and Palliative Care

Mount Prospect, IL-based Presence Health has named John C. Stys, RN, MS, MA, CPHQ, the new chief operating officer/chief nursing officer of Rainbow Hospice and Palliative Care. He assumes this role effective Aug. 7.

Stys has 20 years of experience in several system-level clinical nursing and quality improvement roles. In his most recent position, he was the director of quality assurance and performance improvement for Lexington Health Network in Lombard, IL. While there, he reported directly to the system CEO for the quality assurance and performance improvement activities of five business units: hospice, home health, private duty nursing, sleep diagnostics and sleep durable medical equipment.

Since December 2015, Stys has served as the interim administrator for Lexington Home Health Care, interacting directly with several health plans and hospital partners such as Advocate Health Care and AMITA Health.

Prior to this role, Stys served as the director of quality improvement and patient safety for Erie Family Health Center in Chicago. During his tenure, he was involved in clinical quality and educational partnerships with Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Swedish Covenant Hospital and Norwegian American Hospital. He also developed and implemented the quality improvement, patient safety and clinical risk management programs.

Stys earned a Master of Arts degree in philosophy and healthcare ethics at Loyola University of Chicago, a Master of Science degree in quality improvement and public health at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, and an undergraduate degree in nursing and communication at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT.

Steven Toomey takes helm at Fox Run's Ascot Restaurant

Steven Toomey has joined the dining team at Fox Run, an Erickson Living community in Novi, MI, as executive chef of the Ascot Restaurant.

“After being a cook and chef in the ‘real-world' restaurant scene for years, Fox Run appeared to be a breath of fresh air,” Toomey said. “I enjoy being surrounded by good people, and Fox Run offers that.”

Toomey is no stranger to restaurant kitchens. He started washing dishes at a local restaurant in his hometown when he was just 13 years old and has been working in the industry ever since.

Toomey's recipe for Michigan maple smoked salmon:

(Serves 12 to 15 as an appetizer) 

5 lb loin fresh salmon, skin on

1 cup Michigan maple syrup

For the brine:

2 qt cold water

1/2 C salt

1 C brown sugar

1 C Michigan maple syrup

  1. Combine brine ingredients.
  2. Place salmon into brine for 6 to 8 hours.
  3. Pull salmon from brine and pat dry.
  4. Place salmon in fridge overnight, uncovered to develop a “skin” or pellicle (a coating of proteins on the fish that allows smoke to better adhere during the smoking process).
  5. Place salmon in a cool 150-degree smoker (skin side down) and allow to smoke for 4 to 5 hours.
  6. Every hour, baste fish with 1 C Michigan maple syrup.
  7. Pull from smoker, allow to cool, and serve.

He was a line cook at several Lansing MI-area restaurants throughout high school and college. He attended Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte, NC, where he earned a degree in culinary arts. After graduation, he got a job at the 1913 Room in the Amway Grand Hotel in in Grand Rapids, MI.

“After gaining fine-dining experience, I transitioned, and I quickly became a sous chef for a national restaurant chain BBRG (Bravo/Brio Restaurant Group) and then an executive chef soon after,” Toomey said. “After working in several restaurants for the company, I was working in Chicago when my wife and I decided to come back home to Michigan, as we were expecting a baby girl.”

Toomey came to Fox Run just a few months after the community debuted the new Signature Dining program, which features fresh, made-to-order, resident-focused menu offerings.

During his first few months at Fox Run, Toomey was getting acclimated and said that, like any chef, he is eager to make his mark on the menu. He rolled out his first menu last month, and he added several new dishes, such as marinated lamb loin chop, flat-iron steak with chimichurri sauce, Tex-Mex meatloaf, Cajun shrimp and grits, and crab macaroni and cheese.

LeadingAge Florida presents 8 awards at annual meeting

LeadingAge Florida recognized outstanding members, employees and residents in eight categories at its recent annual meeting.

Peter Dys, CEO Emeritus of Shell Point Retirement Community, won the Lifetime Achievement Award. This award had not been bestowed since 2006. It honors an individual who, through his or her body of work, has provided LeadingAge Florida and the state with significant, transformative leadership in aging services.

Erwin Bodo, PhD, won the Chairman's Award, which recognizes an individual who has demonstrated a passion for aging services, a depth of commitment to LeadingAge Florida, and a lasting effect on the field of aging services that is truly peerless in the state.

Elizabeth Sholar, administrator and senior director of healthcare services at Fleet Landing, was named Executive of the Year. This award is presented to the CEO, executive director, administrator or manager of a member community who has demonstrated the highest qualities of leadership, a willingness to mentor others and innovation and significant contribution to the work of LeadingAge Florida.

Lisett Fernandez-Montero of St. Dominic Gardens was named Service Coordinator of the Year. The award recognizes a service coordinators who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to residents through innovative programming and supportive services, creative problem-solving and genuine concern for each resident's wellbeing.

Kevin Mannix, director of dining services at Cypress Grove at HealthPark Florida, was named Employee of the Year. The award recognizes an employee in a LeadingAge Florida member community who demonstrates extraordinary dedication, provides consistently excellent customer service, delivers outstanding performance and demonstrates a commitment to the enhancement of the quality of life for residents.

Francis “Chance” Irvin, chair of the Penney Retirement Community Board of Directors, was named Trustee of the Year. The award is presented to a volunteer who has served with distinction on the board of a LeadingAge Florida member home and has demonstrated a significant contribution of time and effort to the betterment of a not-for-profit community and its residents.

The Memory Bridge Program of Water's Edge extended Care at Sandhill Cove, was named Best Practice. The award recognizes an individual or group of individuals from a LeadingAge Florida member community who develops programs and services that are models of excellence, innovation and best practices at work.

Shirley “Bunny” Weston, a resident of Bishop's Glen, a Retirement Housing Foundation community, was named Volunteer of the Year. The award recognizes a resident, resident organization or non-resident who is a volunteer who enhances the quality of life for residents; preserves the dignity, well-being and independence of residents; and demonstrates the mission of the member community in several ways.

John Stasinos joins Cindat as managing director

John Stasinos has joined private equity firm Cindat Capital Management, Los Angeles, as managing director. He will focus on the firm's healthcare real estate practice area.

Stasinos' most recent post was as executive vice president–international at HCP. As the head of HCP's international portfolio, he led a team that sourced and asset managed HCP's approximately $1 billion portfolio in the United Kingdom. During Stasinos' 13.5-year tenure at HCP, he played a key role in all the major transactions that HCP completed both in the United States and internationally.

“With his deep knowledge and relationships within the U.S. and international market for healthcare real estate, John will help us tremendously to realize our vision of assembling a high-quality portfolio on a global basis,” said Greg Peng, Cindat's CEO.

Stasinos graduated in 2002 with an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business; was a Fulbright Scholar; and earned his undergraduate degree in 1996 in economics and history with high honors and distinction from Stanford University.

Tim Cobb joins Berkadia as managing director, seniors housing and healthcare investment sales lead

Tim Cobb has been hired to help commercial real estate company Berkadia expand its support of seniors housing investors throughout the United States.

He brings almost two decades of experience to Berkadia in his new role as managing director and seniors housing and healthcare investment sales lead. He will be located in Berkadia's D.C. Metro office.

“Tim's proven track record on both the lending and sales side means that investors have a resource who understands their needs and knows how to get their deal done,” said Keith Misner, head of investment sales.

Cobb will work closely alongside Christopher Honn, senior managing director and head of the Seniors Housing & Healthcare Group, to build an integrated sales platform that showcases Berkadia's full-suite of capabilities. Berkadia's Seniors Housing & Healthcare team has producing more than $1 billion in loan volume each year for the past three years, according to the company, which also said it is the number one HUD loan originator.

Prior to joining Berkadia, Cobb was a senior managing director at Blueprint Healthcare Real Estate Advisors, where he managed the East Coast office and provided investment sales advisory for institutional clients nationwide. He also has held senior roles at CFG Capital Markets, Heller Financial, GE Capital and KeyBank. He is a member of the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care and the American Seniors Housing Association.

Berkadia is a joint venture of Berkshire Hathaway and Leucadia National Corp.

Calvin Knowlton is keynote speaker

Calvin H. Knowlton, PhD, founder, chairman and CEO of Moorestown, NJ-based Tabula Rasa Healthcare and board chair at The Evergreens continuing care retirement community in Moorestown, was the keynote speaker at The American Society for Automation in Pharmacy MidYear Conference in Palm Beach, FL, on June 22.

He discussed the issue of adverse drug events and how technology can provide solutions.

“Regarding adverse drug events, unintentional misuse and overdose is looming,” Knowlton said. “As pharmacists, we must collaborate with our software friends to provide us with the medication risk mitigation tools we need to effect change and eliminate ADEs, which are often cited as the fourth leading cause of death. It is time to integrate the science that underlies our medication safety metrics into our pharmacy technology and systems.”

Tabula Rasa HealthCare is a healthcare technology company with the goal of optimizing medication safety by developing new medication risk mitigation and medication decision support tools.
