Maryland law enforcement authorities believe that a man may have carried flowers into a senior living community as a cover to steal thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry, cash and credit cards from at least four residents.

The Harford County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a man they believe stole valuables worth $87,000 to $100,000 from residents of Brightview Avondale in Bel Air, MD. The office posted information to its social media accounts Aug. 8 in an effort to identify a man captured on video carrying flowers as he entered the independent living and assisted living community July 28. Deputies responded to a report of a burglary at the facility later that day.

“He walked into the facility. We believe that it’s possibly a ruse so that people would think that he belonged and that he was going to visit somebody, carrying flowers to take to his loved one,” Maj. William Davis told a television reporter with WMAR. The man may have targeted rooms when occupants were in common areas, he told a reporter with WBAL.

Brightview Senior Living representatives told WMAR that they have a state-of-the-art security system and that this type of incident is not typical. A regional operations manager with the company told WBAL that residents’ safety and security is a top priority.

“This is a message we put out for everyone, no matter where they live: If you have valuables, you should keep them locked [up], because you never know what could happen,” Davis told WMAR.
