A former resident of an Alaska assisted living facility has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for murdering his caregiver there, according to the state Department of Law.

In November, Gilbert Nashookpuk, 26, had pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the year-earlier killing of Glenna Wyllie, 57. He was sentenced Friday.

As McKnight’s Senior Living previously reported, Nashookpuk was a resident at Eye to Eye Assisted Living Home in Anchorage when on Nov. 7, 2015, he called the local police department to report that he had killed Wyllie “because she had been nagging him,” according to the complaint. Nashookpuk had left on foot but later was taken into custody without incident, the Law Department said.

Officers responded to the 911 call and found Wyllie dead in the building’s basement, also referred to as a garage in the complaint. The state medical examiner’s office determined that she died as a result of strangulation and blunt force injuries to the head, according to the Law Department.

Anchorage Superior Court Judge Jack Smith accepted a previously arranged plea agreement that called for a total sentence of 80 years in prison for Nashookpuk, 20 of them suspended, as well as 10 years of probation.
