A former assisted living nurse pleaded guilty Oct. 26 to raping an 84-year-old resident with dementia, according to the Tulsa World.

Stephen Craig Reed, 63, allegedly had sex with the woman in December 2013 at Autumn Leaves of Tulsa, OK. He is expected to be sentenced Nov. 23, when he faces jail time of five years to life for the count.

According to an affidavit, the resident told detectives that she was sleeping in her room when Reed assaulted her, but Reed told detectives the sex was consensual. The resident has filed a lawsuit against Reed, the assisted living community and its owner and manager, the LaSalle Group Elder Care, according to the media report. She is asking for more than $75,000 in punitive damages and other relief.

Kristin Dupont, the LaSalle Group’s vice president of marketing, told Tulsa World that the company conducted a complete background check on Reed before hiring him, reported the allegations as soon as the company was aware of them and has cooperated with authorities. She also expressed sympathy for the resident and her family and said the company remains focused on the safety of residents.
