On Saturday, I finally took advantage of a spa day my husband had given me as a gift some time ago. On the day before Mother’s Day, the observance occupied many conversations.

“We’re all mothers in some way,” the receptionist said to a customer.

She’s right, of course. Whether or not our mothers are still with us, whether or not we have children of our own, we all can celebrate our nurturing qualities.

In our personal lives and volunteer efforts, we extend ourselves to those in need. At work, we mentor and are mentored. Many serve or care for adults at their most vulnerable. At conferences, we give and receive knowledge from one another.

We may not be acting in the formal role of a mother, but we are acting in the spirit of caring for our fellow human beings. “Motherly” certainly is one of the words that could be used to describe such actions, and such actions certainly are part of the many facets of being a woman.

I’m looking forward to hearing stories of all sorts from women of all sorts this Thursday, when McKnight’s Senior Living and McKnight’s Long-Term Care News host our first Women of Distinction Awards event in Chicago.

I’ll be sporting my new manicure and a new perspective on motherhood.

Thanks to PointClickCare for serving as the Platinum sponsor of the program and to Simply Connect for serving as the Gold sponsor.

But you don’t have to wait until Thursday or attend the sold-out event in person to hear these women’s stories. We’ve interviewed several of our honorees and have started to post videos on our website.
