Meridian Senior Living’s first community in Southwest Florida, opening this fall, will feature advanced protection from hurricanes, according to the company.

The lower and upper levels of buildings on the 110,000-square-foot campus of Atrium at Liberty Park in Cape Coral, FL, are being constructed of concrete blocks, with impact-resistant windows and doors.

“The building’s structural design is based on wind load pressures,” said Robert Lord, executive director of Atrium at Liberty Park, which will include 130 supportive independent living, assisted living and memory care units.

Meridian Senior Living said Atrium at Liberty Park will initiate an emergency plan, upon opening, that will include enough generator capacity and fuel to meet the legal requirements set by the state for assisted living communities and nursing homes after Hurricane Irma. The emergency plan also will ensure an appropriate amount of supplies and staff needed in the aftermath of a storm, the company said.

Atrium at Liberty Park also incorporates the latest stormwater and floodplain standards to accommodate heavy rains, according to Meridian.
