Goats help clear land at Willamette View, a CCRC in Portland, OR.

Goats recently helped Willamette View clean up its grounds in a sustainable way.

The animals, provided by West Side Goat Girl, cleared about one acre of blackberries, English Ivy and other noxious plants and weeds on the 27-acre continuing care retirement community* campus in Portland, OR. A goat keeper followed behind the herd, lopping and chopping blackberry stalks, which goats don’t eat. The event was hosted by Willamette View’s Green Team, a group of residents who promote recycling, environmental awareness and sustainability.

More than 465 residents call Willamette View home. It was founded in 1955 as the region’s first CCRC. The campus overlooks the Willamette River.

*At the 2015 LeadingAge annual meeting, a replacement term for CCRC, life plan community, was introduced and gradually will be phased in to refer to the category.
