Fourth-grade student Debbie Laguerre has been named the newest “Watermark Kid” at the Watermark at 3030 Park, Bridgeport, CT.
Watermark for Kids is an organization designed to empower young people to build character, strengthen their leadership skills and express their creativity, compassion and spirit. It is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by Tucson, AZ-based Watermark Retirement Communities, the company that manages the Watermark at 3030 Park.
Watermark residents and associates select a young person from the area for the honor and provide encouragement and support as their “Watermark coach.” Laguerre was nominated by Barbara Sterne, a resident of the greater Bridgeport area who attends fitness classes at the Watermark’s gym.
Laguerre, 9, was chosen for the honor because of her academic and athletic achievements, as well as her positive and energetic spirit. Laguerre and her family arrived in the United States from Haiti in 2013 and since that time, she has excelled at learning to speak English. She also has an extracurricular interest in gymnastics and a goal of improving her tumbling skills, so Watermark for Kids is providing Laguerre with a year of gymnastics lessons at the Performing Arts Center of Connecticut in Trumbull. Additionally, the Watermark has outfitted her with the apparel and activewear accessories that she will need for the classes.
“Debbie is an outstanding young lady full of determination, energy and creativity — all of the characteristics we look for when selecting our Watermark for Kids,” said Cindy McGuire, fitness director at the Watermark and liaison for Watermark for Kids. “I know that Debbie will thrive learning the fundamentals over the next year, and we can’t wait to have her back to show us a routine and tell us about her experience!”
