Residents at a table cutting vegetables.

Residents of Brandywine Living at Mountain Ridge, Watchung, NJ, recently joined together to cut up vegetables for a soup they delivered with homemade muffins to Saint Ann’s Soup Kitchen in Newark, NJ, a missionary of Franciscan Charities.

The mission of Saint Ann’s Franciscan Charities is to tend to the critical needs of the poor, provide tools to help them rise above poverty and to support physical, emotional and spiritual healing.

The idea to help the soup kitchen was sparked by Brandywine resident Michael Lopez, who attends Mass, along with other residents, at the affiliated Saint Mary’s Stony Hill Catholic Church in Watchung, NJ.

“I always get involved with volunteer work and love to help out the church as much as I can,” said Lopez, a retired New York City police detective.

Fellow resident Edith Bege, when asked why she likes to volunteer, said, “It makes you feel like you’re worthwhile by accomplishing something for people that are in need, and it gives a feeling of great happiness.”
