For several months, the residents of Brightwater Senior Living in Victoria, TX, have been volunteering with the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent in Victoria.
The volunteer work begins when Caryl Todd, Brightwater social director (far right in the group photo at the food bank, below), and some residents who have become known as “The Beautiful Brightwater Bag Ladies,” bring boxes of labels and bags to their Brightwater facility. Residents enjoy socializing as they separate the bags into groups of 25 and attach the rice or bean labels to the bags. Within a two-week period, several thousand labeled bags are ready to be returned to the Food Bank.
A few residents travel to the Food Bank on a bi-weekly basis to actually fill some of the labeled bags. The bulk food packaging involves filling, weighing and sealing the bags of rice and dry beans. The packages of dry food are then ready for dissemination to needy citizens who live in the 10 South Texas counties that are served by the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent.
Several years ago, and well-before they moved to Brightwater, Llyn Daniels and Peggie Larde (far left in the group photo at the food bank) drove from their homes in nearby Refugio, TX, to collect various food donations from Victoria’s fledgling food bank. After they returned to their home town, they actually participated in giving the food items to needy local citizens. As they work behind the scenes today, they are reminded of the great satisfaction they felt as they, personally, distributed these foods.
