A program at the Renaissance on Peachtree, Atlanta, enables memory care residents to eat their favorite foods, even if they cannot easily manage utensils or swallow solid foods. The Dining with Dignity program is available to residents of other Arbor Company Engaged Living memory care programs, too.
Two chefs worked in a test kitchen for five months to devise a culinary technique that involves grinding cooked food and presenting it in a way that retains the taste, texture, consistency and attractiveness. “Foods that stimulate the senses with the same tastes and textures allow our residents to once again enjoy a delicious meal in a way that was thought to be long forgotten,” says Deborah Osterhaudt, Arbor Company vice president.
To date, 30% of memory care residents participating in the program have shown improved intake, and 90% of respondents to a resident and family survey approve of the menu choices, according to the company.
The program is a previous winner of a Best of the Best Award from the Assisted Living Federation of America.
