An Amazon Alexa-enabled device helped foil an attempted theft from a resident’s room at a Florida assisted living community, according to police.
Officers were called to Brookdale Ormond Beach in Ormond Beach, FL, on Dec. 22, and were told that a man had entered a resident’s room without permission and had stolen cash and credit cards, the Ormond Beach Police Department said. The virtual assistant had detected the man’s presence in the room, which alerted a family member of the resident. That family member went to the facility and confronted the alleged thief, Russell Bannister, who was still in the resident’s room, police said.
“Bannister initially fled on foot but was quickly contacted by the police and arrested,” the department said.
Police believe that Bannister may have stolen from other area assisted living community residents. Three potential victims identified by the Ormond Beach Police Department are aged 90 or more years.
