RiverView Ridge Living Center

Less than two weeks from a scheduled opening, disaster struck RiverView Ridge Senior Living.

Around 6 a.m. Tuesday, the 40-unit senior living complex in Rock Valley, IA, went up in flames. Firefighters spent more than three hours putting out the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

No residents, staff or construction workers were injured. The building’s structural damage appears to be significant, however. The two-story complex largely was made of wood, which may have helped the fire spread. A sprinkler system had been installed — and was scheduled for activation later in the day.

The community was planned as an intimate setting where seniors could interact in a cozy environment, complete with home-cooked meals. Planned amenities included dining facilities, sitting rooms, a beauty shop and outdoor living areas.
