American Senior Communities has fired CEO James G. Burkhart and launched a search for an interim and permanent replacement.

The action came Sept. 18 and follows the Sept. 15 federal government raid of the company’s Indianapolis headquarters and Burkhart’s Carmel, IN, home. Members of American Senior Communities’ board of managers have assumed CEO duties for now.

The government has not commented on its investigation, American Senior Communities said in a statement released to McKnight’s Senior Living. “As a result of ASC’s internal review, this investigation does not touch upon the operation of any nursing home serviced by ASC,” the company said, adding that the termination of Burkhart’s employment will not affect the company’s operations.

The new CEO, American Senior Communities said, “will embrace ASC’s core values of C.A.R.E.—Compassion, Attentiveness, Relationship and Excellence—and promote and maintain the ASC culture of caring for others while demonstrating the highest level of integrity.”

American Senior Communities offers independent living and assisted living apartments, assisted living memory care, skilled nursing, hospice and other services for older adults via 94 entities in Indiana and Kentucky, according to its website.
