Brookdale Senior Living HQ in the spring

The top five spots on Argentum’s list of largest senior living operators in 2018 remain unchanged from 2017. Brentwood, TN-based Brookdale Senior Living continues to hold the No. 1 spot with a total of 90,526 units, almost three times as many as the No. 2 operator, Winter Park, FL-based Holiday Retirement, with 31,731 total units.

Rounding out the top five largest senior living operators on the Argentum list are Des Moines, IA-based Life Care Services, with 28,825 total units; Newton, MA-based Five Star Senior Living, with 26,762 total units; and McLean, VA-based Sunrise Senior Living, with 23,752 total units.

Data are current as of March 31, according to Argentum.

Brookdale tops separate Argentum lists of the largest assisted living and memory care providers, and Holiday leads the list of largest independent living community operators.

Leading the ranking of largest continuing care retirement community operators is Life Care Services, with 70 properties.

Toledo, OH-based Welltower was named the largest real estate investment trust based on senior living investment value, which was $17.1 billion. The REIT has 611 properties with 62,398 total units, according to Argentum. Chicago-based Ventas has more properties, 676, but a senior living investment value of $16.2 billion.

Argentum also introduced a new list of not-for-profit providers this year, and it is topped by Springfield, VA-based National Senior Campuses, with 23,184 total units.

This year’s list expanded from 115 operators to 125. Argentum specifically called out St. Charles, MO-based Arrow Senior Living (No. 82), with 1,656 total units; Portland, OR-based Generations (No. 85), with 1,573 total units; Naperville, IL-based Charter Senior Living (No. 104), with 921 total units; and Franklin, TN-based Vitality Senior Living (No. 125), with 176 total units, as new to the rankings.
