A New Mexico assisted living and memory care community has opened a COVID-19 unit to offer older adults a place to recover from the virus outside of a hospital setting.

Haciendas at Grace Village in Las Cruces, NM, announced last week it is partnering with the New Mexico Department of Health and the New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department to provide space in its community for recovering senior COVID-19 patients.

The state approached the community a month ago about converting one of its four campus buildings into a COVID-19 recovery space to free up hospital beds and allow older adults to receive individual care. Haciendas will assign staff members to work specifically with COVID-19 patients and currently is advertising for certified nursing assistants to work in the unit.

The recovery unit has a capacity of 19 beds and began accepting patients on Friday. State infectious disease experts toured the location and said it was a safe undertaking for the campus.
