McKnight’s Senior Living Editor Lois A. Bowers poses with two awards she won at the Press Club of Cleveland’s All Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards.

McKnight’s Senior Living Editor Lois A. Bowers received two awards for her writing Friday evening at the Press Club of Cleveland’s annual All Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards. It was the 45th anniversary of the program.

Elizabeth McIntyre, executive editor of Crain’s Cleveland Business and president of the Press Club Board of Directors, told awards ceremony attendees at the House of Blues Cleveland that the winners represent “the best of the best” and noted that this year’s competition had received “hundreds and hundreds” of entries.

Bowers won first place for headline writing in a category open to magazines, Sunday magazines, alternative publications, trade and professional publications (like McKnight’s Senior Living) and business publications.

The winning headline was “Giving gray hair the green light,” which topped her column about two senior living CEOs’ decisions to stop dyeing their hair, the reactions they received and how their decisions could benefit the senior living industry and society as a whole.

Bowers also won second place in the Trade Publication Department or Column category for an editor’s column she had written. The award recognized “The courage of her convictions,” about Juniper Communities’ and CEO Lynne Katzmann’s decision to ensure that users of the company’s health plan “can access all of their health benefits, including reproductive health services, should they wish to do so” following the Supreme Court’s overruling of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision of 1973. The contest judges said that the column was a “nuanced exploration of a sensitive topic.”

The competition was open to all professional journalists working in or publishing in Ohio via daily and other newspapers; consumer, trade, professional and business publications; radio; television; and websites. Awards recognized work completed in 2022. Entries were judged by members of other press clubs from around the country.

McKnight’s Senior Living has won 18 awards in the All Ohio Excellence in Journalism competition since the brand began entering it in 2017. The brand has won 12 journalism awards so far in various contests in 2023.
