Brentwood, TN-based Brookdale Senior Living tops the 2019 ASHA 50 list of largest U.S. senior housing operators, and Toledo, OH-based real estate investment trust Welltower tops this year’s ASHA 50 list of largest owners.

The rankings, released Tuesday, reflect property and unit totals as of June 1. On the operator list, Brookdale had 811 properties with a total of 76,803 units as of that date, according to the American Seniors Housing Association. On the owner list, Welltower had 735 properties with a total of 72,881 units.

Factoring into the rankings are independent living, assisted living and memory care units, as well as skilled nursing beds when they are part of larger retirement complexes such as continuing care retirement communities, also known as life plan communities, and do not account for more than 30% of total beds, ASHA said. Affordable housing units do not factor into the rankings.

The top 10 senior housing owners for 2019 all appeared on the 2018 list as well, although some were in a different position. REITs Welltower, Ventas and Senior Housing Properties Trust moved up in this year’s rankings compared with last year, whereas Brookdale and HCP moved down. Boston Capital, Colony Capital, New Senior Investment Group, Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society (Good Sam) and Senior Lifestyle kept their same spots.

The ranking of the top 10 operators for 2019 was almost identical to 2018, with Good Sam (No. 10 last year and No. 9 this year) and Capital Senior Living switching positions.

Total units / beds changed for all of the operators, however. Brookdale, for instance, had a total of 96,026 units / beds on the 2018 list of largest operators but 76,803 units / beds on the 2019 list. Holiday Retirement, Senior Lifestyle and Capital Senior Living also saw a decrease in beds / units, whereas LCS, Five Star Senior Living, Sunrise Senior Living, Erickson Living, Atria Senior Living and Good Sam saw increases.
