Senior living communities are facing grave uncertainty amidst the novel coronavirus pandemic, according to a story Thursday in Healthcare Finance.

Many challenges being faced by hospitals are similar to those within senior living communities, including a shortage of personal protective equipment and an ongoing concern for workers’ and patients’ health. Senior living communities, however, have far fewer revenue-generating opportunities than hospitals, and those revenue streams are quickly drying up.

“Such facilities earn their bread by accepting new patients, but because COVID-19 poses a particular threat to older Americans, many are hesitant to become residents — threatening the financial model upon which senior centers are built,” the author wrote.
