The Department of Health and Human Services announced an additional $40 billion in CARES Act distributions to healthcare providers Wednesday, with checks going out as early as April 24.

What is known about the funds thus far is that skilled nursing facilities are part of a portion of funds that HHS is using to pay providers based on their total revenue, according to a blog post by the American Health Care Association / National Center for Assisted Living. The agency will distribute $20 billion of the $40 billion based on a percentage of providers’ total revenue but will make some adjustment for Medicare revenue, which was recognized in the prior payment.

HHS also is distributing $10 billion to providers in COVID-19 hotspots, although this may be for hospitals only. AHCA / NCAL said it is working to verify that detail, and if long-term care is not part of these funds, the association will seek reimbursement for SNF and assisted living COVID-19 hotspots in future funding.

Congress is likely to add $75 billion to this fund after the House’s expected approval of more stimulus dollars this week, replenishing the fund to slightly more than $100 billion.
