The chief tax-writing committee in the U.S. House of Representatives is looking to add universal paid leave and guaranteed access to affordable, quality child care to the proposed $3.5 trillion economic package being considered in Congress.

The plan would provide up to 12 weeks of leave for workers for various situations, having a new baby at home, a serious medical condition, or caregiving leave when they need it without fear of losing their jobs and paychecks. Workers would be eligible to collect at least two-thirds of their earnings while on family leave.

“Our nation’s inadequate childcare options and lack of paid family and medical leave have prevented talented workers from contributing to our economy,” Rep. Richard E. Neal (D-MA), chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, told the committee

“The benefits of paid leave are substantial, making it a smart investment. It improves business productivity, boosts employee morale, reduces turnover, and makes it easier for employers to attract skilled workers,” he said.
