Roughly four-in-five assisted living communities and nursing facilities are reporting occupancy rate declines compared with a month ago, according to data collected last week from owners and executives at 94 seniors housing and skilled nursing operators nationwide.

More assisted living units in particular reported declines last week compared with the week before, up to 81% of those reporting compared with 65% the week before. About two-thirds of senior living organizations reporting on their independent living and memory care units last week also experienced a month-over-month decline.

The survey was conducted by the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care. This report marks the fourth installment of findings from NIC’s weekly Executive Survey of operators in seniors housing and skilled nursing.

More respondents last week also cited an organization-imposed ban on admitting new residents into their communities or facilities, compared with data from the second and third waves of the survey, 61% this week versus 41% and 49% the past two weeks, respectively.

Most respondents continue to report no change in the pace of move-outs in the past month, the survey showed. Of note in last week’s survey, however, about one-quarter of organizations with assisted living units reported an acceleration in move-outs in the past month, up from 17% in the week prior.
