Nursing homes are seeing higher turnover rates for certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses and registered nurses than are continuing care retirement communities, according to an analysis of historical data published by Hospital & Healthcare Compensation Services. 

For instance, the turnover rate for CNAs in 2021 is 51.38% in nursing homes and 45.87% in CCRCs. For LPNs, it’s 37.67% in nursing homes and 36.81% in CCRCs. And for RNs, it’s 41.06% in nursing homes and 40.45% in CCRCs. These are the highest rates seen over the past decade, for each of the positions and settings.

The lowest turnover rates of the past decade came mid-decade. Over the 10 years, the lowest turnover rate of any of the three positions in nursing homes has been 25.18%, a rate seen in 2014 among LPNs. By comparison, the lowest turnover rate among CNAs, LPNs and RNs in CCRCs has been 25.04%, a rate seen in 2013 among LPNs.
