Grief counselors were on site Thursday at a Pennsylvania continuing care retirement community after two residents were killed, allegedly by their son, the previous evening.

According to the Chester County District Attorney’s Office, Bruce Rogal, 59, attempted to kill his ex-wife around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, apparently after he received a divorce decree. He then allegedly went to the Bellingham Retirement Community in West Chester, PA, and killed his parents around 6:15 p.m.

A manhunt ensued, and Pennsylvania State Police troopers subsequently chased Rogal via car to his ex-wife’s home.

“Shots were exchanged during the pursuit,” the district attorney’s office said. “Rogal’s vehicle eventually crashed into his wife’s residence.” Authorities reportedly found Rogal dead in his car.

Media reports identified the victims as William and Nancy Rogal and said they were in their late 80s.

“We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred last evening, and our hearts and most sincere condolences go out to the family,” Senior Lifestyle said Thursday in a statement to McKnight’s Senior Living. “The safety and well-being of our residents and staff are our primary concern, and grief counselors are onsite today to support our community. We thank the local authorities for responding so swiftly and will continue to work closely with them throughout their investigation. We cannot comment further while the investigation is underway. We appreciate your care and concern as we mourn this great loss at our community.”

The district attorney’s office is continuing to investigate the incident.
