The allure of drugs figured into several recent senior living-related incidents.

Former nurse’s aide Sherrie Lynn Walker was sentenced Dec. 7 to jail time and 10 years of supervised probation, according to Inforum.com, after admitting that she removed fentanyl patches from three residents at Eventide Senior Living in Moorhead, MN. Family members of some victims said the residents were not able to walk, stand or speak afterward.

Walker, who in October pleaded guilty to one count of felony theft and three counts of neglect of a vulnerable adult, gross misdemeanors, received credit for the 65 days she has served and was sentenced to an additional 25 days.

McKnight’s Senior Living did not receive a response to a request for comment made to Eventide’s corporate office.

Also Dec. 7,  a former certified nursing assistant at The Waterford at Woodbridge assisted living community in Plattsmouth, NE, was sentenced to three years of probation for taking a nebulizer from a resident’s room while he was receiving medical attention at a hospital, according to the Plattsmouth Journal.

Beth Hawkins had pleaded guilty in October to one Class III felony charge of burglary, according to the media outlet, and in exchange, prosecutors dropped two other charges. She also voluntarily relinquished her CNA license. As part of her sentence, Hawkins must take “victim empathy and moral recognition therapy courses,” complete 40 hours of community service and abstain from alcohol, according to the newspaper.

The prospect of medication also attracted an armed man to the Closer to Home assisted living community in St. Ignatius, MT, on Dec. 7, several media outlets reported.

A worker there allegedly had a gun pulled on him by a man who demanded narcotics, according to TV station KPAX. The man left when the worker told him that the community did not have narcotics. The gunman had not been identified or captured as of the afternoon of Dec. 9.

A call placed to Closer to Home was not answered, and the phone did not have a voice mailbox set up. An email sent to the contact listed on the community’s website was returned as undeliverable.
