A former worker at an assisted living community in Alabama has been charged with financial exploitation for allegedly stealing $9 million in cash and real estate from a former resident.

Lisa Daugherty, who was a unit coordinator at Oak Landing Assisted Living in Attalla, AL, has been arrested by the Alabama attorney general’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and charged with two counts of financial exploitation of the elderly for allegedly stealing $8 million in cash and $1 million in real estate from a former resident. She is being held in the Etowah County Jail on a $1 million bond, according to a release form shared Wednesday by Attorney General Steve Marshall’s office.

A person answering the phone at Oak Landing Assisted Living said the community had no comment on the charges for McKnight’s Senior Living. Daugherty was employed by the community from Nov. 8, 2013, until her resignation in July 2017.

Two other women related to Daugherty were arrested for receiving stolen property. Brooke Crawford, her daughter, and Jenita Johnson, Daugherty’s former partner, are being held on $5,000 bond each.

Daugherty faces two to 20 years in prison and a $30,000 fine on each of the two counts. Crawford and Johnson face similar prison time and fines.

An investigation by the MFCU was conducted following a referral form the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama. Fraud unit agents were accompanied by officials from the Boaz Police Department, Etowah County Sheriff’s Department and the Etowah County District Attorney’s Office on Daugherty’s arrest.

In October 2019, Daugherty was named in a four-county federal indictment, charged with one count each of wire fraud, money laundering, filing a false tax return and theft of government property, according to a release from the U.S. District Court. At the time, the courts sought forfeiture of a number of assets seized from Daugherty, including cash and automobiles. Those cases were dismissed a short time later, according to the Birmingham Real-Time News.
