The former vice president of a Virginia continuing care retirement community is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 24 after being charged with nine felony counts of embezzlement for allegedly stealing approximately $60,000 from the community over four years.

Sarah Nichole Hagan, 34, was fired from Bridgewater Retirement Community in late June after the community “uncovered evidence of significant financial misconduct regarding corporate resources,” President Rodney Alderfer said in a statement posted on the CCRC’s website. At the time, Alderfer said the misconduct was not related to residents’ personal funds, property or care.

“I am deeply saddened, as I know so many members of our BRC community will be. Sarah had forged strong relationships with BRC team members and residents alike, and members of her family had also developed caring relationships within the BRC community,” Alderfer’s post read. “We have capable and dedicated teams whose top priority, always, is the wellbeing of our residents, and I am especially grateful for them right now.”

The embezzlement charges span four years, from 2016 until her firing in June. Hagan, who was vice president for independent living and assisted living, was charged June 24.

Bridgewater Retirement Community was in the news earlier this year when Alderfer contracted COVID-19. He has since recovered.
