A comparison of rates by agency type finds that registered nurses in hospital-based home health agencies are the highest paid, with an average hourly rate of $38.43, according to a new report by Hospital & Healthcare Compensation Service.

For RNs in visiting nurse organizations, according to the 2020-2021 Home Care Salary & Benefits Report, the average hourly rate is $37.40 per hour, whereas the average rate for for-profit agency RNs is $33.24 per hour and the not-for-profit agency average is $32.90 per hour.

The survey also shows that the average hourly rate for RNs in home health agencies increased 2.29% in 2020. Also on the rise: the national average turnover for RNs, which jumped to 25.85%, compared with 20.55% in 2019.

“Part of the increase in RN turnover was due to the high demand for RNs in hospitals during the COVID-19 crisis, which caused some home health RNs to leave to assist where needed most,” Rosanne Zabka, director of reports at HCS, told the McKnight’s Home Care Daily. The 200+ page report includes participation from 1,049 home health agencies and is published in cooperation with the National Association for Home Care and Hospice.
