Clare Luz, Ph.D., founding director of IMPART Alliance, a Michigan coalition of researchers, direct care workers, clients and agencies, recently discussed the progress her organization has made when it comes to improving the lives of direct care workers.

Now responsible for administering Michigan’s Building Training Building Quality home care training program, IMPART Alliance is piloting a personal care aide technical training program for high school students. Four students will complete the program virtually this year and receive their certification.

“We’re also in the process of establishing a Direct Care Worker Professional Association, one of the first in the nation,” Luz said. “The planning committee is comprised entirely of direct care workers who have already developed a set of professional, ethical and competency standards for association members.”

IMPART Alliance partners with PHI as part of its Essential Jobs, Essential Care multiyear advocacy initiative.
