University of Peloponnese researchers in Patras, Greece, are trialing artificial intelligence devices that could be used in the future by the elderly, disabled and those living with chronic conditions. One of these devices, a smart mirror, uses facial recognition technology to detect signs of potential illnesses.
“The mirror measures basic but critical biometric modalities, such as heart rate and blood pressure,” said Christos Antonopoulos, Ph.D., assistant professor at the University of Peloponnese, “and can even indicate potential future problems with the liver and other organs. “This information is directly sent either to the doctor or family members.”
Additionally, sensors can monitor the resident’s movements, even spotting early signs of conditions like dementia, if telltale regular behaviors change.
