Most hospital-discharged COVID-19 patients may benefit from home healthcare, according to a study of 1,409 patients who were admitted to home healthcare settings after hospitalization.

After an average of 32 days in home healthcare, 94% of patients were discharged, and most saw a statistically significant improvement in symptoms and function. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania Schools of Nursing and Medicine, Villanova University Fitzpatrick College of Nursing and the Visiting Nurse Service of New York noted that the findings suggest that acute care providers should determine which COVID-19 survivors would benefit from home healthcare after hospitalization.

Investigators also called for further research to examine longer-term outcomes of COVID-19. The findings are published in Annals of Internal Medicine.
