New York, California and Illinois saw the biggest population losses of all states between 2010 and July 1, 2019, according to population estimates released this month by the U.S. Census Bureau.

New York saw a net domestic outmigration of 1.4 million people, California’s number was 912,000, and Illinois ended up with 491,200 fewer people at the end of the timeframe.

Where did these people move? Many times, it was to warmer-weather states.

The top two destinations for New Yorkers were Florida and New Jersey, whereas Californians preferred Texas and Nevada, and the top to states for those from Illinois were Florida or Texas, according to a Bloomberg analysis of tax returns and other data. The analysis did not cite the reasons behind the moves.
