Senior living is making a comeback, according to Argentum’s 2022 list of the largest senior living providers in the country.

The report revealed growth for several companies that moved up the rankings and stability for others as they remained at or near their 2021 positions. 

Even with fewer total units, Brookdale Senior Living maintained its top spot. Atria Senior Living unseated LCS, which moved down to third, for the second spot after buying Holiday Retirement, renamed Holiday by Atria, last year.

Five Star Senior Living, now the name of the senior living division of AlerisLife, moved up to fourth place from fifth last year, and Erickson Senior Living, which changed its name from Erickson Living in 2021, moved from seventh place to No. 5. Sunrise Senior Living remained at spot six.

Senior Lifestyle moved up from eight last year to six this year, and Discovery Senior Living climbed from 16 to eight. Integral / Solstice Senior Living also rose to nine from 19 last year, with Watermark Retirement Communities remaining at 10.

  10. Watermark Retirement Communities: 11,060

Twenty-eight companies moved up the list by 10 or more spots, according to the association. The report ranks providers in size by number of units, number of employees, types of care and services offered and more.

Topping the list of largest assisted living providers are Brookdale (31,570 assisted living units), Sunrise (13,924) and Five Star (11,308), all of which maintained their rankings from last year’s report.

The three largest independent living providers are LCS (23,168 independent living units), Erickson (21,368) and Brookdale (15,267). 

Last year’s largest memory care providers repeated their domination this year: Brookdale (9,065 memory care units), Sunrise (5,881) and Frontier Management (5,153).

The largest continuing care retirement / life plan community providers also maintained their rankings from last year: LCS (90 CCRCs), Five Star (36) and Century Park Associates (30).

The report did not factor in skilled nursing units.

See the full lists here. The report, based on company-provided data via survey, also includes information on the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, occupancy and successes in 2021.

The report was prepared in partnership with Lument. Lument Managing Director Aaron Becker said responses to the survey were “overwhelmingly positive,” indicating a favorable outlook moving forward.
