Lois A. Bowers has been named best business publication columnist in Ohio, and McKnightsSeniorLiving.com has been named the best business publication website.

The two honors, announced July 3, were among four total awards that McKnight’s Senior Living earned in the Ohio’s Best Journalism Contest, sponsored by the Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists. The accolades recognize 2018 efforts.

Bowers won first place in the Best of Show – Best Trade Columnist category for Editor’s Column pieces that appeared in the print magazine. “Lois Bowers’ personal anecdotes kept these informative columns lively. They were a pleasure to read!” the judges said.

McKnightsSeniorLiving.com was recognized with first place in the Best Trade Publication Website category. The judges praised the site’s features and said it was easy to navigate. Named on the award are Bowers, John O’Connor and Mark Speakman.

Bowers also earned second-place honors in the Best Department – Trade Publications category for her Editor’s Column and in the Digital Media – Best Headline Writing category for headlines on McKnightsSeniorLiving.com.

A total of 301 Ohio SPJ Awards will be bestowed in an Aug. 17 ceremony to professional journalists working at general circulation newspapers and other print publications, television stations, radio stations, digital media and media for trade / business / professional publications with audiences in Ohio or with significant reach in Ohio, as well as to professional freelance journalists and college-student journalists. Media members in Michigan and Pennsylvania judged this year’s competition.
