McKnight’s Senior Living has won four first place awards in the Ohio’s Best Journalism competition, sponsored by the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists. The awards were announced Thursday.

Editor Lois A. Bowers, Content Editor Kimberly Bonvissuto, Editorial Director John O’Connor and Art Director Mark Speakman won first place in the Best Trade Publication Website category for the brand’s website, mcknightsseniorliving.com. The honor represents the fourth time in the past five years that McKnight’s Senior Living has captured the top award in this category.

Bowers won first place in the Best in Show, Trade Publications – Best Trade Columnist category for her editor’s columns. The judges said: “Best of the best in a highly competitive category. Columns are well written and challenged readers appropriately to really think about the effects of the pandemic on those working in the senior healthcare community.” The award marks the second time in the past five years that Bowers has won first place in this category, also having won second place once in that timeframe.

Bowers also garnered first place in the Trade Publications, Best Department category for a collection of three editor’s columns. This is the third time in the past five years that she has won first place in this category, also having won second place once during that time.

Bowers also won first place in the Digital Media, Best Headline Writing category for a collection of six headlines. This is the second time in the past five years that she has won first place in this category, also having won second place twice in that time.

Awards were given for work completed in 2020 by professional journalists working at general circulation newspapers and other print publications, television stations, radio stations, digital media and media for trade / business / professional publications with audiences in Ohio or with significant reach in Ohio, as well as to professional freelance journalists and college-student journalists. Entries were judged by the Indiana Pro SPJ Chapter.

Awards will be presented Oct. 2 in Newport, KY.

Overall, in 2021, McKnight’s Senior Living has won or shared 22 awards in competitions including the American Society of Business Publication Editors’ national and regional Azbee awards, the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals’ Hermes Creative Awards, Communications Concepts’ Apex Awards and the Press Club of Cleveland’s All Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards.
