Susan Levy, M.D., CMD, is a mammoth in Delaware healthcare.

“Her influence on Delawareans is difficult to measure,” Delaware Health Care Facilities Association Executive Director Cheryl Heiks said of Levy.

“She has greatly impacted countless residents, their families, staff and fellow healthcare professionals.”

Levy is the medical director for three long-term care communities across the state. She oversees the care of approximately 400 residents.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Levy leapt into action and moved to the forefront of decision-making and advocacy for the state. She volunteered to be an adviser for the Delaware Division of Health Care Quality and participated in every State Health Operations Center call.

“People trusted Dr. Levy, and because of her participation, better decisions were being made on the front line,” Harrison Senior Living Chief Operating Officer Frank Beech said.

Mid-Atlantic nursing home residents have trusted Levy for years. Before moving to Delaware, Levy was the vice president of medical affairs for Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital in Baltimore. In this position, which she held for more than 17 years, Levy oversaw a 120-bed long-term acute care hospital, a 210-bed nursing home with a discreet skilled unit, and a ventilator unit. Her work led to Levindale becoming the first certified Eden Alternative facility in Maryland.

Even earlier, she was the section chief of geriatrics at Franklin Square Hospital Center in Baltimore. There, she developed the geriatric medicine curriculum for the internal medicine residency program and developed an outpatient geriatric medicine practice.

Levy also has served in several other positions, especially within AMDA–The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine. She currently is a board member of the AMDA Society Foundation Board and is a former AMDA president.

Colleagues look to Levy for guidance and stewardship. Beech said that she is “one of the greatest people you can have on your speed dial, and you can stand a little taller when you know she is on your side.”
