The minimum wage increased in 21 states on Dec. 31 or Jan. 1, and four states plan to raise the minimum wage later this year, according to a report from the National Employment Law Project.
All changes listed below were effective Jan. 1 except for those for New York, where the changes were effective Dec. 31.
1. Alaska’s hourly minimum wage went from $9.89 to $10.19.
2. Arizona’s minimum wage increased from $11 to $12.
3. Arkansas raised its minimum wage from $9.25 to $10.
4. California upped its minimum wage from $11 and $12 for small and large employers, respectively, to $12 and $13.
5. Colorado boosted its minimum wage from $11.10 to $12.
6. Florida’s hourly minimum wage inched up from $8.46 to $8.56.
7. Illinois’ minimum wage increased from $8.25 to $9.25.
8. Maine raised its minimum wage from $11 to $12.
9. Maryland upped its minimum wage from $10.10 to $11.
10. Massachusetts boosted its minimum wage from $12 to $12.75.
11. Michigan’s hourly minimum wage inched up from $9.45 to $9.65.
12. Minnesota’s minimum wage increased from $8.04 and $9.85 for small and large employers, respectively, to $8.15 and $10.
13. Missouri raised its minimum wage from $8.60 to $9.45.
14. Montana upped its minimum wage from $8.50 to $8.65.
15. New Jersey boosted its minimum wage from $10 to $11 ($10.30 for seasonal, small or agricultural employers)
16. New Mexico’s hourly minimum wage increased from $7.50 to $9.
17. New York’s minimum wage rose from an $11.10-to-$15 range to an $11.80-to-$15 range, depending on employer location and size.
18. Ohio raised its minimum wage from $8.55 to $8.70.
19. South Dakota’s minimum wage inched up from $9.10 to $9.30.
20. Vermont boosted its minimum wage from $10.78 to $10.96.
21. Washington’s hourly minimum wage increased from $12 to $13.50.
The four states raising their minimum wages later this year are Connecticut, Illinois (again), Nevada and Orgeon. In total, 24 states and 48 cities and counties — a record-high 72 jurisdictions, according to NELP — will increase their minimum wages sometime in 2020.
