A company that provides software for assisted living communities, group homes and other organizations serving elderly or disabled individuals announced on Tuesday a potential data breach that affects almost 60 facilities or companies in Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri and Tennessee.
The security incident, according to Tenx Systems, doing business as ResiDex Software, puts at risk the personal information and protected health information — including names, Social Security numbers and medical records — of current, former and prospective residents and staff members, the company said. A forensic investigation was unable to identify any specific individuals whose information may have been compromised “due to the complexity of the event and efforts undertaken by the perpetrators to conceal their actions,” ResiDex said.
The investigation found that the breach, involving ransomware that affected the company’s server infrastructure and took its systems offline, occurred around April 2. ResiDex said it became aware of the incident on April 9 and began notifying all those potentially affected by it on June 7.
ResiDex said that once it discovered that its systems were compromised, it was able to restore its servers to a new hosting provider on the same day, using backups and other information.

April was the worst month on record for healthcare data breaches, according to the HIPAA Journal. More data breaches were reported in April than in any other month since the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights started publishing reports on such incidents in October 2009, the journal reported.
