More senior living residents are using video to document their end-of-life care wishes. Experts agree that these videos can help bring clarity to a subject that is often buried in confusion and doubt.
“When you can see a patient expressing what their true intended wishes are, in their own voice, looking into a camera, that’s a very powerful tool,” said Ferdinando Mirarchi, founder of the Institute on Healthcare Directives, during an interview with Kaiser Health News.
Currently, Maryland is the only state that has passed legislation allowing advance directives to be put on a video format. New Jersey allows them as supplements to written documents. More states appear likely to follow.
One catalyst may be physicians, who seem willing to embrace their use. A study released earlier this year found physicians are more likely to concur with recommended treatments in difficult circumstances after viewing videos in conjunction with written directives.
