President Trump holding up a finger at press conference

When will the country be open after the coronavirus pandemic peaks? It’s a question many senior living operators are grappling with. And like most questions with a political dimension, consensus is proving difficult to find.

On Monday, governors from Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York said they would jointly plan the reopening of the region. Shortly afterward, West Coast governors in California, Oregon and Washington announced a “regional pact to recovery.” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz also said he will be in contact with the governors of Michigan and Wisconsin to try to work together in the upper Great Plains.

So governors will decide when things open up, right? Well, not so fast. The same day, President Trump rebuked state executives during a COVID-19 update. Trump noted that when it comes to deciding when to open up the country, his “authority is total.”

Yesterday, Trump also announced the members of a second coronavirus task force. This “Opening the Country Council” will be tasked with determining when and how to reopen the nation, he said. The conflicting views could lead to yet another political and legal showdown, according to analysts.
