David Michael Otey (Crow Wing County Jail)

The administrator of a Crosby, MN, senior living community said community officials are continuing to work with authorities after an employee was killed there Saturday. Her brother has been charged with the crime, according to police.

Crosby Police Department officers responded to the community, Heartwood, around 8 a.m. after receiving a 911 call of a reported stabbing. They found an employee, later identified as Danyele Marie Johnson, 38, dead at the scene, the department said in a press release. Also at the scene was a man later identified as Johnson’s brother, David Michael Otey, 37, who was taken into custody, police said.

Johnson was a cook who had worked at the community for about three years, Heartwood Campus Administrator Mike Hall told the local media. She had been working in the kitchen when Otey arrived at the community, according to the Star Tribune, citing charging documents. He allegedly helped her prepare food for about 30 minutes before stabbing her multiple times with a knife.

The community was guarded by law enforcement, and visitors were asked to stay away, until about 5 p.m. Saturday while an investigation of the scene was underway.

Monday, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner ruled Johnson’s death a homicide and said the cause was a “sharp force injury,” the police department relayed.

Otey was charged Tuesday with felony second-degree intentional murder without premeditation. He is being held in Crow Wing County Jail, according to the police department.

Heartwood offers independent living, assisted living and memory care.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to Danyele’s family for their loss,” Hall said in a statement dated Monday and posted on the community’s website. The senior living community received in-person support from leadership at its two owners, Presbyterian Homes & Services and Cuyuna Regional Medical Center, he added.

“We are offering counseling to our employees and providing emotional and spiritual support to the residents and their families,” Hall said. “The safety and well being of all who live and work at Heartwood is our highest priority. We will continue to support the local authorities in their investigation and appreciate their resolve to answer the questions that surround this case.”
