An expansion at a New Jersey continuing care retirement community will benefit expectant mothers and their babies in Africa.

Springpoint Senior Living’s Monroe Village in Monroe Township, NJ, recently opened an 87,000-square-foot healthcare center, Village Point Rehabilitation & Healthcare, which meant that items at the campus’s former healthcare facility were available for donation.

Springpoint volunteers recently met at Monroe Village to help load a truck with hospital beds and other pieces of durable medical equipment that will be donated to Itando Mission of Hope and Health Care Centre in Kenya.

“We are thrilled to know that our donated equipment will be put to such great use,” Springpoint Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer David Woodward said. “It will help increase Itando’s inpatient capacity for maternal and child healthcare and enable women to receive care in a comfortable hospital bed instead of having to deliver their babies on a metal stretcher and receive pre- and post-natal care on the floor. This will improve their comfort, care, quality of life and recovery.”

Colleagues from The Atrium at Navesink Harbor — Director of Health Services LuAnn DellaPietro and Executive Director Michael Gentile — identified the charitable organization as needing beds and medical equipment, Woodward said.

Opened in 2011, Itando is a nonprofit health facility that offers primary health care. It is owned by Mudavadi Memorial Foundation of Kenya and Sananda Foundation of Spain. The organization will handle shipment of the goods to Kenya.
