The state of Florida now recognizes the National Certification Board for Alzheimer Care’s Alzheimer Caregiver Guide (PDF) to meet the four-hour training requirements for direct care workers in assisted living communities.
NCBAC offers the online training as preparation for candidates who sit for the certified Alzheimer’s caregiver exam. Communities use the Alzheimer Caregiver Guide as part of a hybrid training program. Direct care workers complete the eight-module online guide, which includes a 25-question practice quiz. After staff members complete the guide, supervisors follow up with in-person training sessions to ensure that core competencies are practiced in providing proper dementia care.
NCBAC’s Alzheimer Caregivers Guide also is approved for nursing homes (one- and three-hour curricula, which also are approved for use in adult day care and hospice facilities) and home health (two-hour curriculum).
The organization uses the healthcare licensure model to issue certifications including certified Alzheimer caregiver and certified Alzheimer educator. The Alzheimer Educator Guide also is available to professionals who train direct care workers and as an educational tool for those preparing for the CAEd exam.
Additionally, NCBAC offers a no-cost, online, one-hour course, “Introduction to Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (ADRD),” that is approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and is listed on the Advancing Excellence/Partnership to Improve Dementia Care in Nursing Homes repository of resources.
